Forbidden City - 2011

Nova Gallery, Beigao Artists Precinct, Redgate Residency Beijing

My work is often made in response to place and people and to the narratives that arise and to the narratives that as a result of circumstance and the history of human occupancy. The objects and materials that that I use are removed from their normal context and, instead are used to generate new meaning by their transformative reinvention.

In Beijing the juxtaposition of the fabulous architecture of the Forbidden City with the extraordinary markets of daily life inspired me to marry the two in this installation, using the beautiful geometry of the Forbidden City alongside the ingenuity and beauty of the instruments of everyday life.
